I'm in Singapore, what

Update for those of you that love and worry about me.

Its been a week in.

Scarily during this time, i even managed to pick up a slight singaporean twang.

These past few days i have been mostly eating, walking around and shopping. Nothing mind blowingly exciting but has been cool nonetheless. Next week I play tourist and become all snap-happy with the camera. The family I'm staying with have been great, and the weather has been surprisingly cool for this time of year. (By cool i mean by singaporean standards - in UK standards, it has been chokingly hot and stuffy)

Managed to pick up a few items from the main department stores, i've been to them all already - Isetan, Tang Plaza, Takishimaya, Wisma... I'm hoping to buy a helluva lot of stuff and make this trip worth it on the basis of shopping alone. I'm ordering a new pair of specs and maybe contact lenses too, since its 50% cheaper than in UK. Also am considering getting a new mobile phone, wallet, shoes.. gotta look the part for next year ya know!

Food wise.. life's been good. Unfortunately, i still never get hungry enough to fully appreciate the cuisine because of the humidity and heat. But dammit, if you hand it to me on a plate, i'll sure as heck eat it.

Tomorrow I'm heading to Miri in Malaysia with my friend and her family, as her dad lives and works there. I look forward to the barbeque fish. Next week, fingers crossed we will head to Bangkok - assuming this pain in the arse military coup doesn't affect our plans. And we've booked ourselves a 20pounds return coach ticket to Kuala Lumpur for the week after, so i'm all set, man!

I'll try and post some pictures here soon. The last time i came here, almost all my pictures were on my camera which i subsequently lost - it was really quite heartbreaking. So i'll make up for it like a manic Japanese tourist.

Doh!

This year is the 50th anniversary of one of childhood's most cherished memories - Play Doh!

A news story caught my eye about the enduring popularity of the pliable, reusable, edible and fun diddly-icious stuff we all used to play with as kids. It mentions how it shaped the imagination of millions of kids worldwide, and i truly believe it too. I now attribute all aspects of my imagination to two things - playschool, (the most fun you can have whilst being 'educated') and playdoh.

Just reading the story brought a smile to my face. Isn't it strange how small token products from your childhood can bring it all back to you and make u reminisce with a goofy look on your face? I was even talking excitedly about the Hungry Caterpillar to my driving instructor today! (To my delight, the book is still incredibly popular and can be found in all good book stores.)

Well, I can't remember all the details but i know i had a whole bucket of play doh pieces that i had mashed together to form an icky pinkish green blob. Something tells me i might have confused it with plasticine - another childhood favourite though not quite as mallable - so then you had soft, pokey play doh completely mushed with hard stiff plasticine, which unlike the former, did go all bad if you didnt keep it in the container.

And oooh my favourite play dog utensil. Cos I know Hasbro made lots of funny equipment thingies for play doh. This gadget here:
Recently it has come to my attention that this thingybob is called an 'extruder'. Yah, try telling that to a four year old. This thing is my favourite squeezy press thing - you roll up a big lump of dog and jam it inside the device. pull the blue rule to whatever stencil design you choose, and pump that thang right outta there!! Voila! To a young, naive me, that was absolute genius. i felt like i was creating art just by slammin my hand down on the red pedal. How chuffed i was :-)

Alas, my recollection of play doh smells elude me - but since Play doh are making their distinctive smell into a fragrance to celebrate their 50th birthday, for childhoods sake i might just.. oh sod it i'll just get some more play doh. (hint hint, xmas coming up..)
